“Surviving was only the first step – I had to die in order to be rebuilt.”

mari-at-lakeI am honoured to have Mari Nelson on the show today.  Listen to an amazing story of personal transformation, reminding us that there are no limitations if we keep moving forward, regardless of the obstacles that life presents.  Her story is one of personal strength and persistence through perceivably insurmountable challenges.  Mari asserts that surviving is only the first phase of the journey.  The rest is up to us as we learn to re-create ourselves and believe again in who we are.

In our interview today, Mari describes her painful journey through physical and sexual abuse in childhood.  She becomes street entrenched by the age of 13, turning to alcohol and methamphetamine to cope with feelings of abandonment, shame and rejection.  Fast forward years later, and Mari is now trading guns for drugs.  Her path leads to an attempt at her life when a deal goes bad, resulting in getting shot nine times in her home with three bullets entering her skull.

Mari changed her life one day, in what she describes as a “spiritual awakening,” and never looked back.  She entered school, and with some help along the way from people that were willing to give her a chance, was able to transform into who she is today.  Mari now holds a masters degree in counselling and runs her own private practices.  Mari inspires others to stay on their path regardless of the challenges along the way.  Her life is one of transformation, warmth, compassion, and encouragement.
