Fun On The Mountain
I completed my first Grouse Grind of the season up Grouse Mountain today. Yet another amazing experience. As it is Saturday, there was lots of people on the climb, but everyone was polite as usual.
There are many folks that make the trek up the Grind every year. Some even do it daily. The trail is 2.9km with an elevation gain of 853 meters. It takes an average of 1.5 hours to climb. I complete it in about 70 minutes typically. Known as “Natures Stairmaster,” there are 2830 steps to the top.
Why Do It?
What do I love about putting myself through such a crazy hike, not once, but several times in the summer months? First I love the physical challenge. That hike keeps your heart rate buzzing with intensity. I also like the comradery with fellow grinders. Everyone is going through the same challenge. Lots of encouragement can be heard along the way. Finally, I love getting to the top. The cafe inside has several vegan snack options. Who would think?
Today, the Grind was part of a strategy to get me back on track after the BMO Vancouver Marathon a couple of weeks ago. I have been going through some post marathon funk. The grind delivered. I am spending the remainder of my Saturday very satisfied after the challenge.
